4.0 out of 5 stars Another fan of the original, June 26, 2011

Before I start, I'd like to make a few things clear. I am a big fan of the original game and was looking forward to the sequel so I already have a positive attachment to this game. Secondly, I'm running this on an Alienware computer with dual graphic cards so I cannot comment on lag issues that have been highlighted by other reviewers.

    The Review
-This game is visually stunning. The more I play, the more time I'm taking to explore the environments and really enjoy the detail the designers have put into the game. It's this very point I think that's causing other to dislike the game. Recently, I've seen a trend in gaming to identify a challenge and work to complete that challenge as quickly as possible. My son is a prime example, he works to get through a game as quickly as possible and doesn't try to enjoy the game, the challenges, and the puzzles. Alice:Madness Returns reminds me of many of the early computer games that were released. Various jumping, lever,... Read more

I bought this game the first day it came out, anxious to play it. While it did not work on my computer because I had crummy a graphics card, my brother allowed me to use his because his computer has the recommended graphics card, and was more suited for gaming. On the highest setting it ran good, but not perfectly, so I turned the resolution and dynamic shadows off (on will really kill your cpu) and it worked much better :)
Now, as for the game itself, it wasn't bad but it was lacking in many areas, which I will explain in a minute.

(NOTE: REVIEW FOR THE GAME PLAYED ON NORMAL MODE, OTHER MODES LIKE HARD, OR NIGHTMARE, MAY HAVE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT THINGS o.o)

5.0 out of 5 stars An Updated Alice, June 18, 2011
    = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Alice: Madness Returns (DVD-ROM)
I just received the game and installed it this evening. I spent close to two hours working my way through the first level and thought I'd throw in my two cents.

First, I'm running it in Windows XP (SP3) on a 1.77 AMD Athlon 64 processor(3500+), with 2GB RAM, and a 7600GT Nvidia video card. For a machine that just meets the minimum requirements, the game runs fairly well. There are a few framerate issues, and it can lag with multiple enemies on the screen. Otherwise, I haven't had a major problem yet. There are minor dialogue cut scenes in which the dialogue skips and repeats itself (the parts where Alice recovers memories), but with the subtitles on, it's not anything to get upset about.

The visuals are gorgeous. The game has some really impressive scenery, and I would say that it's almost worth the cost of admission just for that alone.

The story will seem familiar to anyone who's played the original. It's been expanded somewhat, but it's... Read more

    = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

There's a LOT of game in this box.

There are enough delightful aspects to make it worth a geezer gamer's time and enough light-hearted and simple action to be fun for any kid old enough to enjoy _Treasure Island_. For the hardcore I imagine it's just a romp.

Pirates! is a beautifully-rendered set of minigames stitched together as a story-construction kit packed with yer basic pirate tall-tale elements, plus an extra or two just for fun.

We got the swordfighting part, the ship-jacking part, the town-pillaging part, the pirate-treasure part (complete with fragmentary clues).

We got ripe chaos in the colonies, bad men, good women, and you.

Oh. Did I mention there's dancing?

The action is in sailing, sea battles, sword fights and dancing. The controls in all of them are simple enough that the games are almost instantly immersive, and the acting is never bad, sometimes outstanding, with a lot of rewarding... Read more

    = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Sid Meier's Pirates! (DVD-ROM)
This game is undoubtedly one of Sid Meier's best. The game is easy to learn, fun to play, has GREAT graphics, and several different difficulty levels.

"Pirates" also has an interesting (if innaccurate) historical aspect. Nine famous pirates can be tracked down and defeated in the game, including Blackbeard, Henry Morgan, L'Ollonais, and Jean Lafitte. History buffs like myself will of course know that Lafitte and Blackbeard were about 115 years apart in history, but it certainly doesn't take any fun out of the game.

There are several different modes of play that keep the game interesting- sailing the seas, battling between ships, duels between you and various opponents (Ship Captains, Military Officers, Wanted Criminals, and other Pirates), tactical attacks on cities (my personal favourite), and dances with governors' daughters. Each mode of play features fast paced yet simple gameplay and excellent graphics.

When you aren't sailing around the... Read more

This is my favorite game. There are so many cities it's almost impossible to remember everything so it feels much like a new game each time you play. Sometimes the sea travel seems slow but they did speed up the ship battles in the last patch. There is no lewd behavior or language, no blood and guts, and no death so I think that this game is pretty family-friendly.

Knights of the Old Republic 2 is, in most ways, extraordinarily similar to the original. All the gameplay mechanisms are the same. There are a few new force powers, more feats to acquire, and more items and upgrades. This is not a criticism: the original KOTOR was a great game.

This is not, for one simple reason: it isn't finished. By this, I don't mean that the door is left wide open for a sequel, although it is. I don't even mean that the game is buggy, although it is. The game is literally not finished.

Plot points appear and disappear at random. For example, and without spoiling anything, in the first part of the game, your actions cause a significant problem on one of the other worlds in the game. You get a quest to fix the problem. You find a way to do so. The quest abruptly ends there--there is no way to let anyone know you've solved the problem. Then, at the end game, people complain to you that you never solved this quest. And that's a... Read more

This review is from: Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords (CD-ROM)
The first KOTOR was, in my opinion, one of the greatest games ever. Though it had its flaws, they were few and far between. Obsidian and everyone involved with putting out KOTOR 2: TSL deserves an enthusiastic round of applause for their efforts to make a follow-up to such a stellar game. They managed to come up with a sequel that, while plauged with bugs and other issues, is nonetheless relatively enjoyable.

    First, the good stuff:

TSL is fun to play--most of the time--and delivers much the same kind of experience as the first KOTOR (after all, what can compare to barbequing hordes of Sith with Force Storm whilst laughing maniaclly to yourself?). KOTOR 1 was good, and TSL tries to continue in the same tradition. Though there are plenty of problems with the game (see below), it is worth the time, to play through a few times. Many of the new features, like the streamlined weapon-change function, or the "Empty" label for looted containers, or the fact that new... Read more

Oh, man, here we go with the name calling already. Re reviews below: Ray is not an "idiot" L.L., he just expected his game to run since Kotor I ran okay on his system, and the engine is basically the same. I've had the opportunity to play Kotor II on the Xbox (friend's copy and console), and now I've just finished the PC version (hoping Obsidian/Lucas had learned something in the last two months). No such luck. The game is inexcusably buggy (even after all the feedback from the Xbox version players). This is a serious and distracting problem throughout the game (and Lucas/Obsidian tech support is not good) -- beware!

To be fair, I should note that Kotor II is a darker, more complex, more philosophical story than Kotor I. The GAMEPLAY is somewhat better with a whole new system to build a great Jedi character (Dark or Light) and to handle combat more effectively (new Dark/Light Force powers are available along with new moves, feats and Jedi or Sith "prestige...
